RCC Opens OEC With Lopsided Win
No. 12-ranked Riverside City College opened Orange Empire Conference action with an 11-3 victory over No. 15-ranked Golden West College Tuesday afternoon.
The Tigers improve to 14-5 overall and begin conference play with a 1-0 mark, while the Rustlers drop to 12-6 on the year and 0-1 in OEC.
Riverside finished with nine hits, with Johnny Alley going 2-for-3 with six RBIs. Josh Chairez (2-for-4, three RBIs) and Bubba Heidler (2-for-5) also had two hits for the Tigers.
It didn't take long for RCC to get on the board as Grant Gray knocked an RBI single to score Alley, 1-0. Golden West answered back with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning, but Riverside took back its lead in the top of the second.
RCC loaded up the bases with no outs, allowing Chairez to walk in a run to put the Tigers back in front, 2-1. Alley then drilled a three-RBI triple to up the visitors' lead to 4-1.
The Rustlers put one back on the board in the bottom of the third, but the Tigers walked in two more runs in the top of the sixth. RCC added another run in the seventh before capping the scoring with three runs in the top of the ninth.
With two outs and two runners on, Chairez knocked an RBI single, followed by two RBIs from Alley, 11-3.
Jake Valenzuela picked up the win on the mound with five strikeouts, while Jaden McNeely tossed out four batters, and Brady Pavlovsky added another two strikeouts.
The Tigers and Rustlers continue their three-game series on Thursday, back in Riverside at 2 p.m.
