RCC Shuts Out Southwestern in Ranked Showdown
No. 16-ranked Riverside City College put an exclamation point on the weekend with a 13-0 shutout victory over No. 12-ranked Southwestern College.
The Tigers improve to 10-5 on the year, while the Jaguars fell to 8-5 overall.
Riverside dominated from start to finish, posting 16 hits in the game. Josh Chairez (3-for-4) and Johnny Alley (3-for-3) led the Tigers with three hits each, while Bubba Heidler (2-for-4) and Luis Sosa (2-for-3) also had multiple hits.
In the bottom of the second, Noah Haros got a scoring spree started with a solo home run with one out. The Tigers put two runners on before Sosa drove in another run. Chairez bunted to load the bases and three-straight RBI singles upped RCC's lead to 7-0.
The Tigers tacked on three more runs in the third as Haros tagged up on a sacrifice fly and Heidler came home on a Chairez base hit. Alley capped the scoring with another sac fly as Sosa tagged up on third, 10-0.
Luke Medure added a run in the fourth, while Sosa struck again in the fifth off an Alley infield single. Logan Ortega then sealed the 13-0 victory after scoring in the bottom of the eighth.
Jorge Rodriguez picked up the win on the mound with four strikeouts and just two hits in five innings. Andrew Sanchez, Steven Gonzales, Bryson Krajewski, and Austin Torres each pitched one inning to help preserve the shutout for the Tigers.
RCC remains at home and hosts Barstow College on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
