After finding itself trailing late in the game, No. 16-ranked Riverside City College scored three unanswered touchdowns and made some key defensive stops in the fourth quarter to secure a 41-27 victory over Chaffey College Thursday night.
The Tigers improve to 4-2 on the year and 2-1 in the National-Southern League, while the Panthers drop to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in conference.
RCC finished with 543 total offensive yards, including 391 rushing yards. Marquis Monroe (19 carries, 128 yards) and Kayvion Sibley (15 carries, 116 yards) each ran in two touchdowns, while Kiyel Tyler also ran in a touchdown for the Tigers.
Defensively, Micah Valenzuela had 10 total tackles and one quarterback hurry. David Lene had five solo tackles and two assists, including 3.5 tackles for loss, and a quarterback hurry. Ty Staples and Isaiah Ayers each grabbed interceptions for RCC.
Chaffey took a one-possession lead, 27-20, with just over a minute left in the third, putting pressure on the Tigers to dig deep in the fourth.
Riverside tied things up on its first drive of the quarter after Monroe ran in a four-yard touchdown and Timothy Tynan kicked in the point after attempt.
Tyler came up big for the Tigers with six minutes left in the fourth, finding a hole in the Panther defense for a 56-yard touchdown on just the second play of the drive. Once again, Tynan kicked in the extra point to put RCC up by seven, 34-27.
The Tiger defense grabbed two key fourth-down stops late in the game, one of which led to a Sibley touchdown, to secure the 41-27 victory for Riverside.
RCC looks to carry momentum into a tough matchup next week, heading to No. 5-ranked Southwestern College on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m.
