After finding itself down two sets, Riverside City College battled back to force a fifth set but came up just short in a 3-2 loss (25-23, 25-18, 25-27, 23-25, 15-13) to Irvine Valley College Wednesday night.
The Tigers drop to 3-11 on the year, 1-2 in the Orange Empire Conference, while the Lasers improve to 2-5 overall, 2-0 in the OEC.
Jayden Franchere led RCC with 13 kills on the night, while Savannah Smith also posted double-digit kills with 10 total. Riley Rush dished out 25 assists and had seven service aces.
Defensively, Smith posted 23 digs, followed by Aurora McCulley with 12 digs and Sienna Veum with 11 digs.
RCC jumped out to a 21-15 lead in the third, before IVC battled back to take a 24-23 lead. The two teams then exchanged points before the Tigers scored three straight points to win the set and keep the match alive.
The Tigers carried momentum into the fourth and opened on an 8-1 run with Rush grabbing four of her seven service aces in that span.
IVC managed to climb back in the set and took a 22-19 lead, but RCC called a timeout and scored six-straight points to win the set 25-23 to force a fifth and deciding set.
The Lasers tried to put the set away early and took an 11-5 lead, but the Tigers called a timeout to regroup and pulled within one, 13-12, before IVC called a timeout. The Lasers scored the first point coming out of the break and held on for a 15-13 victory to take the match.
Riverside looks to bounce back, heading to Fullerton College on Friday for a 6 p.m. match.
